I stained the wood with water based mahogany stain from Minwax. It comes in a tube and is not as thin as most stains. This was a good thing since it helped prevent seepage under the masking tape. Other than one or two minor spots, the masked areas came out clean.
Next came a coat of epoxy. The epoxy really darkens the mahogany that is not stained. You also get a lot of variation in color. The stained wood is much more consistent in color. This is after the first coat.
The pictures don't show it real well, but each plank seems a little different under the epoxy while the stained areas are a consistent mahogany brown. A couple more coats of epoxy to go.
